Vintage photographs of old China from Quirky Prints
Vintage photographs of old China from almost a century ago can be a rare find, but when we come across them, they give us a unique insight into a lifestyle that was as diverse and fascinating then, as it continues to be today. China is the world's most populated country, with a culture that stretches back nearly 4,000 years.
Many of the elements that make up the foundation of the modern world originated in China, including paper, gunpowder, credit banking, the compass and paper money. However, when we think of China in the early 20th century, images of old professions and trades, traditionally dressed workers, rickshaws, and dramatic, oriental styles of architecture are more likely to spring to mind.
Quirky Prints recognised our fascination with all things oriental – from foods and home furnishings, to an interest in the country’s culture and heritage. With this in mind, the team set out to track down these elusive vintage photographs, and create an intriguing archive of vintage photographs of old China for its customers. Their search took them to hundreds of antique shops, collectors’ fairs, vintage photograph dealers and specialists around the country.
The resulting collection is literally thousands of handpicked, rare vintage photographs, on all manner of topics, including landscapes, people, shops, far-flung civilizations and transport from years ago. Among the many old black and white photographs that were collected, were some stunning and fascinating vintage photographs of old China from bygone days.
Within a dedicated CHINA category on their website, Quirky Prints offers a selection of these unique vintage photographs. There are views of imposing oriental buildings and monuments, street sellers with their goods and traditionally dressed characters going about their daily lives, and all are captured in evocative black and white photographic detail. These forgotten, but delightful old black and white vintage photographs make stunning framed pictures. They become unique artworks, which can be hung in our homes, or bought as original and imaginative gifts for friends.
