Look at any vintage national dress photos from years ago and the costumes and clothing will have remained almost identical with any that you will see today. For generations, national dress has existed as a reflection of the national character of its people – intrinsically linked to the image and identity of a particular nation.

Different styles of national dress were suited to the particular needs and lifestyle of its people. Highland dress for example, has not altered fundamentally since the eighteenth century and was suited to the needs of the rugged, pastoral and sometimes warlike Scottish people. Welsh national dress is based on the peasant costume worn by Welsh countrywomen of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. This consisted of a striped flannel petticoat, worn under a flannel open-fronted bed gown, with an apron, shawl and ‘kerchief’ or cap.
